Clerics from the Archives - Blogclave
Actually I didn't prepare anything new for this blogcasion. It wasn't on my radar and inspiration didn't struck on time but I may use this moment to ponder over my older thoughts on clerics in OSR/NSR space.
https://vdonnutvalley.bearblog.dev/archival-supernatural-forces-arcane-magic-divine-magic/ in this post I struggle with calling divine powers "magic". And in general with use of tools, foci and stuff in casting.
https://vdonnutvalley.bearblog.dev/archival-bad-apples-in-classes-clerics/ in this one I wanted to summarise my disdain for classical OSR cleric ideas, bring some new maybe and voice my concerns. Considering I stopped the series with only Clerics and Monks it says something about the power of my feelings towards them. Also it got relatively popular a while ago.
https://vdonnutvalley.bearblog.dev/archival-what-ceremony-spell-spells-about-clerics/ and this last post is my letter to mundane cleric, to cleric as a part of community and the world, and not only wielder of greater powers.
Now I think I could change some of my opinions, I grew and changed with time but the main point - the contention with OSR Cleric - still stands. This day and age though I treat my "clerics" rather like warlocks who trade with gods for powers and blessings.
It was interesting reviewing my old thoughts on the matter and seeing I stand by the principle but differ in details.
